Hamam Stone – Kota Stone for Traditional Kashmiri Hamams

Hamam Stone is a special type of Kota Stone slab with a thickness of 70–80mm and a standard size of 3’x2’, known for its strength and heat-retaining properties. It is widely used in Kashmir for constructing traditional Hamams, which are heated rooms designed to keep homes warm during the freezing winters.

In a Kashmiri Hamam, these thick, hand-hewn limestone slabs are carefully laid over a hollowed floor. The slabs rest on brick or stone pillars, with joints sealed by cement for stability. Firewood is burned beneath the floor, and the heat passes through the hollow chambers, gradually warming the stone surface and the entire room.

The walls of the Hamam are lined with bricks and lime mortar, while the floor is layered with sand, stones, and heat-absorbing materials to retain warmth for long durations. A small iron door is used for inserting firewood, and the smoke is released through a chimney extending up to the roof.
